NOTHING ON EARTH MOVES FASTER than Irish Road Racing bikes without actually taking off and flying! Every year, the Skerries 100 attracts the largest crowds at any Road-Racing event in Southern Ireland, with upwards of 40,000 people from all over the world in attendance on the main Saturday race-day. It is the premier Road Race event in the South of Ireland, and organised by Loughshinney Motorcycle Supporters Club - http://www.loughshinnymotorcycleclub.com/

THE TRADITION OF THE ‘ SKERRIES100 ‘

THE BEGINNING - With the end of World War II, Dublin and District Motor Cycle Club (DDMCC) had to revise the location of their annual Phoenix Park Dublin 100 Road Races due to the thousands of tons of war turf stacked along the park’s Main Road. DDMCC found an eager local Development Association at Skerries in North County Dublin, who wished to bring major sports events to the Skerries area to encourage tourism. As the international Leinster 200 Road Races had previously been run on a Skerries-Rush-Lusk circuit in the early thirties (1930-35), the DDMCC agreed.

THE COURSE - After creating a new committee from Skerries Development Association and DDMCC, a new 7.1 mile circuit around some of the main streets of the town was chosen, and the inaugural Skerries 100 was held on Saturday July 6th 1946. Mr. Bill Bowie was Clerk of the Course that day. The first winner was Belfast man Harry Turner riding a 348cc Norton. and the first programme cost one shilling (or 7cents). In 1971 the circuit distance was reset to 2.92 miles and was raced clockwise up to 1978. However after Joe Lindsay RIP lost his life in 1978, the direction of racing was reviewed, and for safety grounds, ran anti-clockwise again from 1979. This is the course currently being used; a new chicane was added between ‘Sam’s Leap’ and the Hills Cricket Club to reduce the speeds at the start/finish line, to the chagrin of many riders and spectators! Sidecars also raced from 1980 to 1986, but the circuit was deemed too narrow.

THE REBIRTH - In 1986, after the then major sponsor of the Skerries100 Shell Oils declined to promote the event again, the DDMCC also withdrew from running the Skerries100, and it looked like the end of an era. However the locally-based Loughshinny Motor Cycle Supporters Club (LSMCSC) stepped in and took over, even though they were already committed to their own annual road race at nearby Killalane in September (which had started in 1984).The first LSMCSC Skerries100 race was on Saturday, July 4, 1987, with Steven Cull set the first ever southern Irish road race lap at over 100 mph in the Grand Final. DDMCC had organised 41 events, while LMCSC will have promoted 22 with the 2008 races.

FAMOUS SKERRIES100 RIDERS  - Many of Ireland and the world’s best motorcycle riders and machines have raced at the Skerries. The plinth of the Skerries100 trophy reads like a who’s who and includes many famous names:

Ernie Lyons, Bob Mathews, Cromie McCandless, Louis Carter, Manliff Barrington, Harry Lindsay, Sammy Miller, Ralph Rensen, Dickie Carter, Tommy Robb, Ralph Bryans, Len Ireland, Chris Goosen, Dick Creith, Ian McGregor, Brian Steenson, Billy Guthrie, Billy McCosh, Ray McCullough, Tom Herron, Michael McGarrity, Cecil Crawford, Courtney Junk, Sam McClements, Mervyn Robinson, Con Law, Eddie Laycock, Conor McGinn, Brian Reid, Robert Dunlop, Steven Cull, Johny Rea, Norman Brown, Phillip McCallen, James Courtney, Denis McCullough, Bob Jackson, Gary Dynes, Derek Young, Adrian Archibald, Darran Lindsay, Ryan Farquhar, Guy Martin, Cameron Donald .

FLYIN' FINN
Of course , a special place is held for the legend that was #45, local hero Martin Finnegan from Lusk - Martin is Ireland's fastest man around the Isle Of Man TT , and is sadly missed.

KING OF THE ROADS – The Skerries100 roads were also graced by the skills of the most successful TT rider ever – the ‘King of the Roads’, one William Joseph Dunlop who notched up 17 wins at the Skerries100, and held several lap records. Indeed, Joey had applied for racing at Skerries on that fateful day in 2000, but later decided to attend a Tallinn Estonia race meeting instead.
